June 2010 Fly-out Camping Trip with Lake Hood Gang

The annual Lake Hood Gang June Fly-out Camping Adventure. This year, we decided to head southwest, along the Alaska Peninusla.

We started the trip by flying along the west side of the Cook Inlet to our first camp site; a nice beach in Chinitna Bay.

The next day we headed farther southwest, cutting across the mountains to Iliamna Lake, via Pedro Bay.

We made fuel stops in Iliamna and Naknek, then kept going to a beach just north of Egegik, along the north side of the Alaska Peninsula.
Our north Egegik spot was great, until the weather went down and the winds kicked up, and our hopes of continuing south to Aniakchak Volcano fell by the wayside.
The next day, we headed back north along Iliamna Lake and found a great landing/camping spot in the tundra, a few miles inland from the lake.

Jack and Coal got some good boy-time in, finding bears on the tundra and teaching each other about chain saws....among other little boy activitiesThe next day, we explored the proposed Pebble Mine area west of Iliamna (above), then continued on to Lake Clark for fuel and ice cream at Port Alsworth.

A little later, we made a stop at a gravel bar in the middle of Lake Clark Pass itself, surrounded by white-sand beaches and beautiful glaciers.


Another great June trip with great friends. Half the gang headed back to Anchorage, the other half stayed out another night and enjoyed some more camping up Chakachamna.

When we got home, Paul and neighbor Ron finished fixing up their new float-changing machine (aka modified forklift) and Paul's new floats and the nifty new forklift permanently moved from our yard to the airport.
